As a child, I was taught a seemingly pedestrian lesson about God that most Christians can certainly recall learning themselves. I don’t remember a great deal about the experience, but I do remember the sheer fascination of learning that God is aware of all the things that go on in our lives. Even those who did not grow up in a Christ-centered environment can relate—after all, a sizable number of children are well aware of a certain jolly and plump gift-giver from the North Pole who can supposedly perform a similar feat.
I knew from an early age that God could see my actions, listen to my words, and know all of my thoughts—whether or not anyone else could. Looking back, it’s easy to assume that we’re simply taught these lessons in an effort to shape our behavior. After all, who wants to disappoint God? If He can see and hear the bad things I do and say, and even knows the trouble I was planning to get into, then I had better shape up—right?
Actually, there’s probably plenty of truth to that. The sooner in life we begin to view our lives as a display before God, the sooner we can begin the journey of becoming what He wants us to be. If the lesson ended there, however, we would still be missing out on an incredible truth.
Go ahead and read Psalm 139.
This passage quickly paints a familiar picture of God as an ever-present companion—the very essence of what God represents in our daily lives (v1-6). He is with us and close to us. He does see our faults and our failures, but He never misses a moment of our joys and our successes. He rejoices beside us when we allow Him to do good things through us—the moments in which we fulfill our true purpose.
We cannot lose or escape God’s unique companionship (v7-12). While we may often wish that God was not privy to our sinful nature and was not aware of our many mistakes, we can take great comfort in knowing one thing—That which keeps Him by our side when we least desire it is the very same thing that keeps Him close when we cry out for help—His incredible and unconditional love for us.
God is such a skilled and deliberate Creator—one who has a purpose for everyone and everything (v13-18). He created the entire world and everything in it for His glory and we are the very centerpiece of His creation. David knew this—and he cried out to God (v19-24). Put aside the exact words and simply consider the act. He told God exactly what was on his mind. He affirmed his appreciation for God’s presence. He requested God’s calming influence for his spirit. Most importantly, he asked for guidance—away from the things that distanced him from God’s purpose and closer to that which would bring him eternal satisfaction.
So often we complicate our daily interactions with God. He is never far away and always understands us. He is our greatest friend, our ultimate source of strength, our most skilled healer, and our most knowledgeable guide—and He’s always right there. Pray that God might take away the distractions in your day-to-day life and that He would provide the quiet calm and reassuring direction that can only come from Him. Thank Him for His promise never to leave you and for showing you just how deeply he cares for you. We truly have no other friend like Him!
